To open this file, Windows needs to know what program created it.
This message will occur when double-clicking a non-executable file. When you have a file emailed to you instead of downloading the file directly, the file is sent to you with a ex_ file extension to prevent virus protection software from deleting the file. When you receive the file, you must rename it from an ex_ file to an exe file before executing. If you do not see the ex_ file extension to rename, you need to turn your file extensions on as follows:
- Double-click My Computer.
- Select View (or Tools) and Folder Options.
- Click the View tab.
- Scroll down to where you see "Hide file extensions for known file types".
- Remove the checkmark from the box.
- Click OK and you should then see the ex_ file extension that needs to be renamed.
