To open this file, Windows needs to know what program created it.

This message will occur when double-clicking a non-executable file. When you have a file emailed to you instead of downloading the file directly, the file is sent to you with a ex_ file extension to prevent virus protection software from deleting the file. When you receive the file, you must rename it from an ex_ file to an exe file before executing. If you do not see the ex_ file extension to rename, you need to turn your file extensions on as follows:

  1. Double-click My Computer.
  2. Select View (or Tools) and Folder Options.
  3. Click the View tab.
  4. Scroll down to where you see "Hide file extensions for known file types".
  5. Remove the checkmark from the box.
  6. Click OK and you should then see the ex_ file extension that needs to be renamed.
Right-click the file name and select Rename. Change the _ at the end to an e and press Enter to save the change. Then double-click to execute.
