Can you explain your Buy it Once, Own it Forever policy in more detail?

When you buy a book from us, we allow you to download that book onto any device for which it is available, regardless of operating system or type of device. We say you own it "forever", which obviously means "as long as Laridian is in business".

There are some details that are important to take note of with respect to this policy:

  • One purpose of the policy is to make sure you get any fixes we make to the book. We frequently update books to fix typographical errors. We treat this as a revision of the same book that you previously purchased, so it falls under the policy and you can download these updates.
  • New editions of a book may not be considered the same book. Copyright owners of our books will sometimes offer revisions or new editions of their books. Sometimes we are able to offer these as revisions of your existing title and sometimes we are not. One example is the 2011 NIV. Zondervan required that we treat it as a separate book from our older NIV. So if you owned the NIV prior to our release of the 2011 edition, you can still download the older NIV but not the 2011 edition, since it is a different book.
  • The policy will never give you new books for free. We frequently bundle books together for marketing purposes. When we do this, the Buy-it-Once policy applies to the individual books, not the bundle. So if we sold a bundle called the "Teacher's Resource Package", then two years later added a Bible and a commentary to that bundle at the same or a higher/lower price, you are entitled to download the books that were in the original version of the bundle you purchased. You are not entitled to books we add to that bundle after you purchased it.
  • Books are not always available for all platforms. We do our best to make sure that all our books are available on all our platforms, but sometimes publishers limit us to specific platforms (often either desktop but not mobile, or mobile but not desktop) or the features of the book require updates to PocketBible that have only been done on certain platforms (for example, a platform may not support Greek text, so we can't offer a Greek New Testament on that particular platform). In the event that the situation changes and we are able to offer a book you previously purchased on a new platform, you will automatically gain access to the book for that platform if you have previously purchased it for another platform.
  • The policy applies to books, not Advanced Feature Sets, programs, bundles (as described above), etc. Some of our products are specifically designed for specific platforms. For example, our BookBuilder program is available for OS X or Windows. You choose which platform you want to run it on. Purchasing it for one platform does not entitle you to download it for another. Another example is our Advanced Feature Sets for PocketBible. These are specific to the platform for which they are created. Purchasing the Advanced Feature Set for iOS does not entitle you to download the Advanced Feature Set for Android.

This policy limits our options in the future. Because we've made this commitment to customers today, if we were to change this policy, the change would apply going forward, not going backward. So if we began to require customers to purchase books for each platform on which they want to use them, we would have to offer existing customers the ability to continue to download books they already own on any platforms on which those books are supported, perhaps limited to the platforms that existed as of the date of the policy change.
