Description

The Pulpit Commentary is a homiletic commentary. That is, it is designed to facilitate preaching and teaching from the Scriptures. Anyone who leads a Bible study or Sunday School class, and especially anyone who spends time preparing sermons, will benefit from its meticulously organized structure and insightful comments.

A thorough introduction is provided for each book of the Bible. In addition to the standard background information, topical articles suggested by the subject matter are included.

The introductions are followed by exposition, homiletics, and homilies for each chapter of the book. The exposition section takes on each verse, word-by-word and phrase-by-phrase. Each is heavily cross-referenced to related passages.

The homiletics section lays out a detailed outline for the entire chapter, suggesting how one might structure a lesson or sermon.

Finally, a number of homilies for each chapter present multiple points of view and areas of application for the text from invited writers. A total of almost 120 authors contributed exposition or homilies to the finished work.

The exposition sections are sync'ed to your PocketBible Bibles for easy reference, but you'll want to scroll further into the text to explore the homiletic sections to get the full benefit of this voluminous work.

About the Editor(s)

Rev. Joseph Samuel Exell, M.A. (1849-1909), served as the Editor of Clerical World, The Homiletical Quarterly and The Monthly Interpreter. Exell was also the editor for several large commentary sets including The Men of the Bible, The Pulpit Commentary, Preacher's Homiletic Library and The Biblical Illustrator.

Henry Donald Maurice Spence Jones, D.D. (14 January 1836 - 2 November 1917) was an Anglican dean and author in the last decades of the 19th century and the start of the 20th. The son of the barrister and Chancery reformer George Spence, he was born at Pall Mall, London and educated at Harvard University and Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, and ordained in 1865. He was a Lecturer in Hebrew at St David's College, Lampeter until 1870 when he became Rector of St Mary de Crypt, Gloucester. From 1877 to 1886 he was Rural Dean of St Pancras when he became Dean of Gloucester, a post he held until his death. Originally H. D. M. Spence, he added the surname Jones (his wife's maiden name) in 1904.
