The promises of God are given so that we can come to know the God of the promises. They are there to show us more of who he is and what he is like; to take hold of our hearts and minds and draw them to himself and into his way of thinking and acting; to get us so familiar with him that it becomes second nature to us to call on his promises in the ordinary everyday events of life, just as Jesus did, and to see our lives transformed as we do so.

The Handbook of Bible Promises has been designed as a handbook of practical Christian living. We have looked at the promises of the Bible and have tried to see how they work out in practice, so that they can become a part of your own life as you are challenged and encouraged by them.

The material is arranged in six major themes. We begin with the persons of the Trinity: God the Father, the Lord Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. Then we move on to how our life with God finds expression in belonging to God's church and living for him in the world: these are the next two major themes. In the final theme we look forward to the future and draw together some of the chief strands of the Bible's teaching about the hope we have for then, and also how it affects us now.

Each of these major themes — Knowing God, Trusting Jesus, Growing in the Spirit, Belonging to the church, Living in the world, Getting ready for the future — is divided into seven chapters. Within each chapter, we explore a particular topic, beginning with a key thought and a key Bible verse to set the scene. After the main study material, comes a hymn (which can be used as a response), a conclusion and a final Bible quotation, all designed to help you retain the main emphases of the teaching. In each section we try to look for the relevance of the promise for us today.

The book has been designed particularly for personal use, but those leading small groups will also find it a helpful resource book — as may a hard-pressed preacher wanting a quick sermon outline!
