About the Author(s)

Josephus was born Joseph ben Mattathias in 37 A.D. in Jerusalem. His family was of priestly and royal descent. He was an exceptional student and had a remarkable grasp of the Jewish law. He spent his formative years studying with the sects of the Sadducees, Pharisees and Essenes, eventually aligning himself with the Pharisees.

At the age of 26, he was sent to Rome to procure the release of several priests that were imprisoned by Nero. When he returned to Jerusalem, he found his people ready to revolt against Rome. He endeavored to dissuade them for having seen the Roman army, he was convinced they were no match. But the revolt took place as planned. He joined his brethren in their efforts, despite his misgivings, taking the position of commander of the revolutionary forces in Galilee. He was eventually captured by the Romans during the siege of Jotapata.

During his imprisonment, Josephus worked on behalf of the Romans to convince the rebels to surrender. Branded a traitor by his own people, he was a witness to the second destruction of the Temple and the defeat of the Jewish nation.

While a prisoner of Vespasian, Josephus predicted that Vespasian would “rule the world.” When his prophecy came true and Vespasian was Caesar, he freed Josephus and took him into his own family. Thus, Josephus became Flavius Josephus.

As a Roman citizen, Josephus undertook to write a history of the war, which he finished in 78 A.D., the Jewish War. His second major work, the Antiquities of the Jews, was completed in 93 A.D. He wrote Against Apion in about 96-100 C.E. and The Life of Josephus, his autobiography, about 100. It is believed he died soon after.

Josephus writings are valued for their eye-witness account of history and the insight they provide into 1st century Judaism.
