Courageous Faith

Description

Prayer. Character. Wisdom.

These are key aspects of the Christian life.

These are essential qualities God calls you to. And it is a worthy calling.

But developing these qualities isn't a matter of working harder or working smarter. Rather, it's a matter of knowing God more deeply—discovering how he wants to work in and through you.

These devotions are drawn from Bill Hybels's writings and sermons such as Making Life Work, Finding God in the Storms of Life, Too Busy Not to Pray and Who You Are When No One's Looking. You'll find a year's worth of inspiration and guidance for knowing God and living out your faith day to day.

Are you ready to accept God's call to courageous faith?

From the Introduction

God's Work in You

"Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labor in vain." (Psalm 127:1)

As you use this book, you will learn about prayer, about character, about building a courageous faith. I'll often suggest ideas for you to think about, pray about, or to do. A word of caution, however. This is not a book about how to get God to sit up and notice you or how to improve your heavenly credit rating. Prayer, wisdom and strength of character are important, but none of them is a way to earn salvation. That is because salvation cannot be earned—not even by courage, discipline, vision, endurance and love. The principles in this book will help you to grow, but only after you have accepted God's gift of life in him.

At the bottom of each page is an activity that gives you a place to start in responding to the Scripture and accompanying thoughts. That activity may be to reflect, to pray or to meditate. Responding to what God has said to you in the daily meditation is always important. Simply reading something will have little effect on you. The suggestion is just a place to start, however, and you may find yourself praying about what you reflected on, and times of meditation should usually end in prayer too.

Beyond that, you may feel led to journal. Especially if the reflection raises confusion within you, it can be helpful to write your thoughts down on paper. Also, some prayers are better written in a journal because you need to be as concrete as possible in your ideas. And sometimes God will speak to you through reflection and meditation in a way that's so downright stunning that these thoughts should be recorded and read for several days.

You'll find a year's worth of devotions here, designed to fill six days a week. We choose to offer six rather than seven for a built-in bit of grace as circumstances do sometimes infringe on our devotional time. But you can use the seventh day to go back to some of the "pray," "journal" and "apply" suggestions you'll find at the end of the devotion.

Answers from God

"The Lord came and stood there, calling as at other times, 'Samuel, Samuel!' Then Samuel said, 'Speak, for your servant is listening.'" (1 Samuel 3:10)

Suppose that you took some time to quiet your spirit before God and pray as Samuel did. In the solitude and stillness, what might God say to you?

To some seekers, God might say, "You've been reading Christian books and going to Christian meetings long enough. Now it's time you became a Christian. Come enter into a faith-oriented relationship with me." To those who have already made the commitment, he might say, "Return to me. It's been a long dry, summer. Let's get reacquainted!" To people facing trials, he might offer words of comfort: "I'm right here. I know your name, and I know your pain. I'm giving you strength, so trust me." To others, faithful through hardships, he might say, "I'm glad you are being faithful even though life is difficult for you. Keep it up!" And to still others, the message might come: "Follow my leading and take a risk. Walk with me toward new horizons."

The message will be suited to the person's individual need, but the central truth is certain: we serve a God who has spoken in history and who wants to speak to us today.

PRAY: Be silent before God. Then pray Samuel's prayer: "Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening."
