    Irving Hexham is professor of religious studies at the University of Calgary in Alberta (Canada). An internationally recognized expert on new religious movements, he is the author (with Karla Poewe, his wife) of Understanding Cults and New Religions (Eerdmans, 1986) and New Religions as Global Cultures (Westview, 1997).
