Barclay himself wrote, "...the primary aim of the series has never been academic. It could be summed up in the famous words of Richard of Chichester's prayer - to enable men and women 'to know Jesus Christ more clearly, to love him more dearly, and to follow him more nearly'." The degree to which he was successful is, ironically, reflected in the words of his critics, who were concerned that Barclay seemed to communicate only to the unlearned, in effect having become a theological journalist rather than a serious academic. His popularity was seen as an indication of departure from the norms of the academic world. Yet those critics were vastly outnumbered by those who found his books to be theologically illuminating and spiritually enriching.

In addition to serving on the committee that produced the New Testament translation of the New English Bible in 1961, Barclay went on to produce his own two-volume translation of the New Testament in 1968 and 1969. It is his translation of the New Testament passages that appears at the beginning of each section of this commentary. Many find that Barclay's fresh translation of the New Testament text in The New Daily Study Bible is one of its greatest strengths, supplementing his accessible and informed introduction and commentary.
