Description

Some Shorter Letters of Paul contains commentaries on Galatians, Philippians, Colossians, and 1 and 2 Thessalonians. The commentaries on Galatians and Thessalonians were written by W.E. Vine and C.F. Hogg together. "These two teachers made an ideal combination," said F.F. Bruce. "They were basically agreed in their interpretation of the great biblical doctrines, and when Mr. Hogg's theological penetration and command of felicitous and forceful English were united with Mr. Vine's special gifts, the result was hard to match. For the student of the English New Testament, these two commentaries will long remain standard works."

Vine and Hogg explained that in Thessalonians Paul "is concerned mainly for the spiritual well-being of those to whom he writes; in Galatians he is concerned for the integrity of the gospel he preached. In Thessalonians he aims at the confirmation of the gospel in the hearts of the believers; in Galatians he is set for its defense against an attack which he was persuaded... would have made Christianity a mere sect of the Jews."

The commentaries on Philippians and Colossians were written by W.E. Vine alone. Philippians is a very personal letter in which Paul thanks the Christians for a gift they had sent him and gives "wise and weighty counsel" about various issues. Colossians deals with both Judaistic and Gnostic errors, showing "Christ as the power against every evil, doctrinal and moral, and the power for all manner of godly living."

The outlines of each of these letters of Paul are particularly helpful for sermon preparation and teaching.

These commentaries by W.E. Vine and C.F. Hogg excel in the rich tradition of careful, exegetical word study and expository commentary. They take into consideration every reference to a particular word in the Bible as well as the range of its uses in ancient Greek. Pastors, scholars, and serious students will enjoy these in-depth commentaries from the man who gave us Vine's Complete Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words.

About the Author(s)

William Edwy Vine (1873-1949), commonly known as W. E. Vine, is considered one of the world's foremost Greek and biblical scholars. His Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words has been a bestselling classic, popular with generations of Bible scholars and students. Yet he wrote much more than the famous dictionary. His timeless biblical commentaries were marked by careful exegetical word study and expository insight.

W.E. Vine worked for Echoes of Service, an organization that supported missionaries around the world. At one time, he kept six secretaries busy corresponding with more than 1,000 missionaries.

"Mr. Vine shows," said F.F. Bruce, "how great a service can be rendered to the Church by well-balanced, all-around scholarship when it is combined with reverent submission to the Word of God and spiritual insight into its meaning.... The Scriptures' chief function is to bear witness of Christ, and the chief end of their study is to increase our inward knowledge of Him.... Mr. Vine, in all his study and writing, would not be content with any aim lower than this for himself and his readers alike."

Charles Frederick Hogg (1859-1943), commonly known as C.F. Hogg, a missionary statesman who spent 17 years in China, returned to England in 1901 after the Boxer Rebellion in which 135 missionaries were martyred. He settled in Bristol, where he and W.E. Vine conducted The Exeter Correspondence School of Bible Study. He had a writing ministry and also preached and taught in England and traveled to New Zealand, Australia, the U.S. Canada, India, and Central Africa.

C.F. Hogg was a careful Bible student and was critical of a sloppy approach to holy things. He felt that cajoling people into a lukewarm profession of Christianity did more harm than good, and he felt that missionary candidates should be rigorously interviewed. "Possibly there would be fewer workers, but those who are called and fitted would be better furnished." He once told a young missionary that the three rules of good Bible teaching were, "accuracy, accuracy, accuracy." C.F. Hogg was a fatherly counselor to missionaries, elders, and preachers and said that "it is no small mercy from God to have so many loyal friends in many parts" of the world.
