Description

Many of the places mentioned in the Bible can be seen to this day. Cities like Jerusalem, Tiberias, Bethlehem and Jericho have lasted through the ages. Others like Megiddo, Hazor and Gezer are attested to by their ruins. Over one hundred years of scientific archaeology have provided us with greater insight into the lives and customs of the ancient peoples who inhabited the region.

This volume presents an exquisite review of biblical archaeology from the mid 19th century up to the present. Rich with illustrations and photographs, it first describes archaeology in general as a disciplined field, and biblical archaeology as a specialized subset of general archaeology. Each major period of biblical archaeology is reviewed with details of the most-recent findings. These periods include the Early, Middle, and Late Bronze ages; Iron Age; Babylonian Period; Persian Period; Hellenistic Period, Hasmonean Period; and Early Roman or Herodian Period. Each of these chapters includes a section titled, "Biblical Connections" detailing how many of the archeological finds interface or shed light on what is recorded in Scripture.
