About this Series

The widely respected pastor and New Testament scholar, N. T. Wright, walks you book by book through the entire New Testament in this series. Perfect for group use or daily personal reflection, these studies use the popular inductive method combined with Wright's thoughtful insights to bring contemporary application of Scripture to life.

About this Volume

Study Scripture with N.T. Wright! There are many misconceptions about Jesus. He isn't just somebody with good ideas or somebody who will tell us how to establish a better relationship with God. He is somebody with authority over everything that the physical world and the non-physical world can throw at us. This is the Jesus Matthew reveals in his Gospel. Through these twenty-five studies we will see a full, firsthand account of Jesus as Messiah, teacher, and Son of Man, giving his life for us all.

This volume also available as part of a money-saving bundle.

From the Preface

Matthew's Gospel presents Jesus in a rich, many-sided way. He appears as the Messiah of Israel, the king who will rule and save the world. He comes before us as the Teacher greater even than Moses. And, of course, he is presented as the Son of Man giving his life for us all. Matthew lays it all out step by step and invites us to learn the wisdom of the gospel message and the new way of life that results from it.

Matthew insists throughout his work that we see in Jesus, even when things are at their darkest, the fulfillment of Scripture. This is how Israel's redeemer was to appear; this is how God would set about liberating his people and bringing justice to the whole world. No point arriving in comfort when the world is in misery; no point having an easy life when the world suffers violence and injustice! If he is to be Emmanuel, God-with-us, he must be with us where the pain is.God had made promises in the Scriptures of his people, promises of rescue from their many troubles. The Romans had conquered their homeland about sixty years before Jesus was born. They were the most recent of several pagan nations to do so. Israel wanted freedom and looked to God to put everything right. And these promises focused on one thing in particular: God would become king. King not only of Israel but of the whole world. A king who would bring justice and peace at last, who would turn the upside-down world the right way again. There should be no king but God, the revolutionaries believed. God's kingdom, the kingdom of heaven, was what they longed for, prayed for, worked for and were prepared to die for.

But Jesus' contemporaries had many misconceptions to overcome in their view of how Scripture would be fulfilled. God would do all this-and more!-but not in the way they imagined. That is the story Matthew has to tell us.

As we move through the chapters of Matthew's Gospel in this guide, we will find a story of danger and hope, of justice and peace. It is a story worth studying.
