Description

Since Jesus was a Jew who spoke to, lived with, and moved among Jews, it is necessary to view his life and teachings in that context. Further, to explain the attitude of the religious leaders of Israel towards Jesus, it is necessary to trace the historical development of their thought and religious belief, which made them irreconcilably antagonistic toward Jesus.

This book attempts to paint a full portrait of Jewish life, society, and thinking at the time of Jesus. As we transport ourselves into that time, we feel that the Gospels present to us a real, historical scene; that the people and the circumstances to which we are introduced speak and behave just as we would expect them to.

We'll also see that while Jesus's words are fitting to their Jewish context, but that there is a contrariness of substance and spirit in his message compared to the way that the best Jewish teachers would have spoken. This is a testament to the veracity of his claims, since it raises the question of where someone of such humble birth and upbringing would have learned to speak in this way.

Rather than simply draw conclusions from what he knows about the subject matter, Edersheim sets out to tell us of the views, teachings, pursuits, and aims of leading persons of the day; the character of popular opinion; and the proverbs, customs and daily life of average people. With this background we can enter their houses, associate with them in conversation, follow them to the Temple or Synagogue, or to the marketplace and their workplace. We learn what clothes they wore, what dishes they ate, what they produced locally and what was imported, how much things cost — every detail needed to lend vividness to a picture of the life of Christ and the times in which he lived.

About the Author(s)

Alfred Edersheim (1825-1889) was a Jewish convert to Christianity. He was born in Vienna into a wealthy Jewish family, studied the Talmud and Torah at a Hebrew school, and studied briefly at the University of Vienna.

Edersheim converted to Christianity under the ministry of a Free Church of Scotland chaplain. He traveled with Duncan to Scotland and studied theology at New College, Edinburgh, and at the University of Berlin. He was ordained to ministry and served as a missionary to Jews in Romania for a year.

In 1875 he was ordained in the Church of England and served in several ministry and teaching posts until his death in 1889.
