Description
Barnes Notes offer a wealth of insight for students of the Bible as well as teachers or preachers.
Albert Barnes (1798-1870) was a Presbyterian minister and theologian who was best known for his accessible and popular commentaries on the entire Bible. Originally published in multiple volumes, his unabridged commentary is published here in one electronic volume.
Barnes Notes offer trusted, time-tested commentary for the entire Bible--verse by verse and sometimes phrase by phrase. In his comments, Barnes interacts with the original languages, contemporary interpretations, and pressing theological topics of his day. Though Barnes defends his personal theological positions, he makes mention of and critiques other alternatives in most cases. The Bible student that may have different theological leanings than Barnes will still find his notes thoughtful, compelling and rooted in Biblical exegesis.

About the Author(s)
Albert Barnes (1798-1870) Presbyterian pastor and commentator whose 11-volume Notes on the Old Testament (1870) and Notes on the New Testament (1832-48) were widely used. From 1824-30, he ministered in Morristown, NJ. In an 1829 sermon, "The Way of Salvation," Barnes drew fire of conservative Presbyterians. He was tried for heresy in 1830, but was acquitted in 1835, for his belief in an unlimited atonement (Christ died for everyone, not just the chosen). He still, however, denied the doctrine of original sin (man inherits this bondage from birth). His trial was the cause of the split into the Calvinist Old School and New School Revivalist Presbyterians in American in 1837 (reunited in 1870, but difference of opinions still existed). Barnes also pastored the First Church, Philadelphia, PA from 1830-67. His wife's name was Abby Smith. He was an active abolitionist and a strong evangelical preacher. Barnes was an avid opponent of slavery and drinking. He was a Sunday School enthusiast.
