How do I backup and restore my MyBible data files?

MyBible 5:

MyBible 5 stores your personal data in the following files:

  • Notes are stored in LaridianNotes-mBib.pdb
  • Highlights (and underlining) are stored in MyBibleHighlights-xxx.prc, where xxx is the name of the translation (NIV, KJV, etc)
  • Bookmarks are stored in LaridianBibleBookmarks-mBib.pdb
  • Bookmark Categories are stored in LaridianCategories-mBib.pdb

MyBible 4 and MyBible 3:

Previous versions of MyBible store the user data in the following files:

  • Notes are stored in MyBibleTextNotes-mBib.prc.
  • Highlights (and underlining) are stored in MyBibleHighlights-xxx.prc, where xxx is the name of the translation (NIV, KJV, etc)
  • Bookmarks are stored in Palm_Preferences.prc. This file may contain data used by your other installed programs as well.

Backing Up: HotSync can perform an automatic backup of these files each time that a HotSync is performed. This backup feature is typically turned on by default, but it can be turned off.

To verify that your backup feature is turned on:

  • On your Windows PC, right-click the HotSync icon in your system tray
  • From the resulting popup menu, choose "Custom..."
  • Verify that your device is selected in the drop down list shown at the top
  • Find "Backup" in the list of Conduits
  • Verify that the Action is set to "Handheld Overwrites Desktop"

This setting will backup files from your handheld to your PC each time that you HotSync.

Please note that the exact steps detailed above may vary slightly for different versions of HotSync.

You can use your Windows Find or Search function on the Start menu to do a search for any of the file names listed above. Copy the files to a backup media or include those files in your normal backup routine. If you lose the data on your Palm handheld and the next HotSync does not restore those files, you can add your backups of those files to the installer of your Palm Desktop software. The easiest way to do this is to copy the files to your desktop computer and then double-click the files. This procedure can also be used if you are switching from one Palm OS device to another.

Caution: Since your data files are backed up every time you do a HotSync, you can erase a good backup by performing a HotSync. For instance, if you have backed up 10 bookmarks, then erased 5 of these bookmarks, then perform a HotSync, your backup file contains only 5 bookmarks. If you later decide that that was a mistake, you will have lost the extra 5 bookmarks on both your device and your backup. To protect against this, make a copy of the files mentioned above on a regular basis and save them to a protected location such as a diskette or other backup media.
