Priority Code:

How do I backup and restore my collection of verses?

Memorize! stores your database of verses in a file based on the name of the database you created. For example, if you called your database "My Verses" then the file name will be my__verses_L119.PDB. If you never gave your database of verses a name then the default is MemorizeData_L119.PDB.

Each time your Palm OS device goes through a HotSync, it should be backing up the files automatically to a backup folder on your desktop computer. We say "should be" because we have found that not all Palm OS devices function in the same way when it comes to backing up the files. Furthermore, the Palm OS backup function will only backup files in main memory. Therefore, if you store any of these files on a storage card or memory stick, they will not get backed up to the computer during the HotSync.

You can use your Windows Find or Search function on the Start menu to do a search for *L119.PDB. This will find all of your Memorize database files. Copy the files to diskette or include those files in your normal backup routine. If you lose the data on your Palm handheld and the next HotSync does not restore those files, you can add your backups of those files to the installer of your Palm Desktop software. The easiest way to do this is to copy the files to your desktop computer and then double-click the files. This procedure can also be used if you are switching from one Palm OS device to another.

Caution: Since your data files are backed up every time you do a HotSync, you can erase a good backup by performing a HotSync. For instance, if you have backed up 100 verses, then erased 10 of these verses, then perform a HotSync, your backup file contains only 95 verses. If you later decide that that was a mistake, you will have lost the extra 5 verses on both your device and your backup. To protect against this, make a copy of the files mentioned above on a regular basis and save them to a protected location such as a diskette or other backup media.
