HotSync quits on large files, I have a T5 or LifeDrive.

Tungsten T5 or LifeDrive
HotSync Error 6410
Installing Large Files

The Tungsten T5 and LifeDrive includes two types of internal memory:

  1. Main memory, used for both program operation and file storage, and
  2. A USB drive, used only for file storage.

The MyBible program should be installed to main memory. MyBible Bibles and reference books may be installed to main memory, the USB drive, or to an SD memory card.

Unfortunately, many Palm OS units include a bug that prevents large files (files about 2MB and larger) from being installed to main memory. Several MyBible reference books are larger than 2MB. If you are installing one of these large files to main memory, and if HotSync disconnects prematurely or if the log file shows error 6410, then this bug is affecting you. If you can install smaller Bibles or books, but not Bibles or books larger than 2MB, then this bug is affecting you.

How to Stop HotSync from Trying to Install Again

Before you begin the process of an alternate installation procedure, you should clear the large files from the installer to prevent the HotSync from continuing to try to install the large files. To do this:

  1. On the DESKTOP computer go to Start > Search > For Files and Folders.
  2. Enter INSTAPP.EXE and do your search.
  3. When the file is found, double-click INSTAPP.EXE to open Install Tool.
  4. Remove any PDB file that is larger than 2MB. Once those are removed you should be able to close the installer and do a normal HotSync and the rest of the files listed (if any) will be installed.

Installing to the USB Drive via HotSync

The MyBible Bible or book setup program may provide an option allowing you to select whether to install to main memory or to a memory card. Select memory card to install to the USB drive.

If the setup program does not prompt you to select, then it will install to internal memory. Use the direct install discussed below.

Direct Install to the USB Drive

The T5 and LifeDrive devices have a drive mode which will allow you to install files directly to the USB drive, bypassing the normal HotSync process. Follow these few steps to install a book or Bible to the USB drive.

  • Using a Windows Computer
    1. Connect your device to the computer.
    2. Tap the DriveMode program found under Applications on your device.
    3. If not on already, press the Turn DriveMode On button.
    4. On your DESKTOP computer, right-click Start and select EXPLORE.
    5. Scroll down to the bottom of your screen and locate the drive letter for your device (for example, it may be the F drive). It will probably say Internal Drive.
    6. On that drive, select Palm and then Programs.
    7. In Explorer, at the top (where it shows File, Edit, View...), click File > New > Folder.
    8. Enter MyBible and press enter. It is very important that you spell this correctly and there are no spaces.
    9. Scroll back up to your C drive.
    10. Select Program Files and then Laridian. You will see a list of folders for each of the Bibles and books you've installed.
    11. Open the folder of the item with which you're having trouble installing (Ex: Life Application Bible Study Notes).
    12. Right-click the file name (Ex: LAB.PDB) and select COPY.
    13. Scroll down to the bottom of your screen and locate the drive letter for your device where you had created the MyBible folder.
    14. Right-click the MyBible folder and select PASTE. In a few seconds the file will start to copy.
    15. Continue this procedure for any other large files that you need to copy.
    16. On the device, turn the Drive Mode to off.
    17. Disconnect your device.
    18. Open MyBible 4.
    19. Tap Tap to open book in the lower left corner of MyBible to open the book.
  • Using a MAC computer
    1. Connect your device to the computer.
    2. Tap the DriveMode program found under Applications on your device.
    3. If not on already, press the Turn DriveMode On button. A window should appear labeled Internal Drive.
    4. Select Palm and then Programs.
    5. Create a folder called MyBible as a subfolder of Programs. Make sure it is spelled correctly and there are no spaces.
    6. Drag the PDB file you are trying to install and drop it on the MyBible folder you just created.
    7. On the device, turn Drive Mode to off.
    8. Disconnect your device.
    9. Open MyBible 4.
    10. Tap Tap to open book in the lower left corner of MyBible to open the book.

Note that you can use a similar process to copy any file... a picture, a music file, an important document that you want to back up... to a folder on your T5 or LifeDrive!
