HotSync quits before completing the installation, or just keeps going and going...

HotSync is used to install Bibles and books from your Windows PC or Macintosh onto your handheld. Under some circumstances, HotSync may not be able to complete the installation. The problem may occur for one of many reaons.

  1. First, check the HotSync log on your handheld or PC. The additional information in the log may identify the source of the problem and the solution.
  2. The Bible or book being installed is greater than 2MB in size, and a bug on the particular handheld prevents the Bible or book from being installed to main memory. See below for more details.
  3. According to PalmOne, a USB hub may prevent successful synchronization. Try installing when connected directly to your PC. See this PalmOne article for more details.
  4. According to PalmOne, not using a USB hub may prevent successful synchronization. Try installing through a USB hub. See this PalmOne article for more details.

PalmOne Bug Related to Installing Large Files

Newer model handhelds from PalmOne are reported to contain a bug that prevents files larger than 2MB from being installed to the handheld's internal memory. Google for "connection lost (6410)" for additional details. This bug may affect the T5, the Treo 650, the T3 and other handheld models.

If you can install smaller Bibles or books, but not Bibles or books larger than 2MB, then it is likely that this bug is affecting you.

Recommendations

  • Google for "connection lost (6410)" to familiarize yourself with the problem, then contact PalmOne support. (We've heard that some PalmOne customer have been able to talk them into giving a free SD card.)
  • Install to an internal or external storage card, such as:
    • An SD card
    • A Memory Stick
    • A CF card
    • Internal expansion memory included on the T5, and possibly other handhelds. (Note that files installed to internal expansion memory of the T5 may be substantially larger. Google for "T5 512 byte cluster size" to learn more about this issue.)
  • Use a card reader / writer to install the PDB file from C:\Program Files\Laridian\product name to \Palm\Programs\MyBible on the card. This will bypass the normal HotSync function.
  • If you have a T5 or other model that includes an internal USB drive, refer to our knowledge base article specific to that model.

How to Stop HotSync from Trying to Install Again

Before you begin the process of an alternate installation procedure, you should clear the large files from the installer to prevent the HotSync from continuing to try to install the large files. To do this:

  1. On the DESKTOP computer go to Start > Search > For Files and Folders.
  2. Enter INSTAPP.EXE and do your search.
  3. When the file is found, double-click INSTAPP.EXE to open Install Tool.
  4. Remove any PDB file that is larger than 2MB. Once those are removed you should be able to close the installer and do a normal HotSync and the rest of the files listed (if any) will be installed.
