What is DailyReader?

DailyReader is a software program designed for computers using Windows CE. It is used to simplify the reading of books, called Daily Reading Books, that are intended to be read on a daily basis. For example, many devotional books contain a reading for each day of the month, quarter, or year. DailyReader keeps track of what you've read and is always ready to provide you with today's reading. Read-through-the-Bible schedules are another example of the type of books that can be used with DailyReader. DailyReader is able to show you the list of verses to be read on any given day and also, if you own a Laridian Bible translation, even the Bible verses themselves. Reading through the Bible in a year may never be easy, but it's never been as easy as it is with DailyReader.

DailyReader is a "modular" system. That is, the DailyReader program is available separately from the Daily Reading Books, and is capable of reading any Laridian Daily Reading Book (.ldr) file. Once you have purchased and installed DailyReader and a Daily Reading Book, you can add additional books as it suits your interest. It is not necessary to purchase and install a second copy of DailyReader; it is capable of reading your additional books!

What is a Daily Reading Book?

DailyReader is the program that "reads" Daily Reading Books published by Laridian. But what is a Daily Reading Book?

A Daily Reading Book is simply a book that contains daily readings. For example, many devotional books are divided into one reading for each day of the month, quarter or year. The top of the page often identifies the date that the reading is to be read, and the remainder of the page contains the reading for that day.

DailyReader maintains this familiar format on your Windows CE device, and is used in much the same way that you might use a printed book.

With your printed book, each day you would pick up the book, turn to the reading for that day, and read the devotional or inspirational reading. Then, when you've completed the day's reading, you might bookmark the next page or mark the page with a distinguishing mark (such as highlighting the page number) to indicate that you've completed that reading.

With DailyReader, you'll open your Daily Reading Book each day, turn to the reading for that day, and read the devotional or inspirational reading. Then, when you've completed the day's reading, you'll check the box that shows that you've completed the reading. You can easily turn pages to see the next or previous readings, click on hyperlinks to read related Bible verses, and even open additional Daily Reading Books if you have different books that you like to read from each day.

Using Copyrighted Materials

Most of the Daily Reading Books available for DailyReader are protected by US and International copyright laws. To find complete copyright information on any book, see About This Book or Properties, depending upon your type of Windows CE device.

First and most important, you can not give or sell copies of DailyReader or any of its copyrighted books to other people; nor can you install DailyReader or any of its copyrighted books on more than one computer at a time. You can keep a backup copy of the setup and installation files on your desktop computer. For more information, see Laridian's No-nonsense License Agreement.

Second, if you copy text out of any of the copyrighted books that are sold with DailyReader, you may be subject to limits that are set by the copyright holders. Look for the "Permission to Quote" statement in the book you're interested in copying from. If you have any doubts, contact the copyright holder named in the copyright statement.

Generally, you can use any copyrighted material for your own personal use and for certain educational uses. But even educational use does not permit unlimited copying. Contact the copyright holder if you need to quote extensively from copyrighted material.

Selecting a Daily Reading Book

The method used to select a Daily Reading Book varies depending upon the type of computer you are using.

Pocket PC: Press the OK button in the upper right corner of DailyReader until the document list appears. Tap the book that you wish to view.

Palm-size PC:Choose Open to select a Laridian Daily Reading Book (.ldr) file to open. In the resulting Open dialog, browse to the folder that contains the book that you wish to open. Lardian Daily Reading Books are typically installed in the "My Documents \ Laridian Books" folder, though you can choose to install them to any location. Caution: Palm-size PC devices require that files be installed into the My Documents folder or a folder contained by My Documents. If you installed the book to a Palm-size PC device and chose a directory other than My Documents or one of its folders, you may not be able to locate the book with the Open dialog. If this occurs, uninstall the book and install it to the default folder, to the My Documents folder, or to any folder contained in the My Documents folder.

Hand-held PC:Choose Open to select a Laridian Daily Reading Book (.ldr) file to open. In the resulting Open dialog, browse to the folder that contains the book that you wish to open. Lardian Daily Reading Books are typically installed in the "My Documents \ Laridian Books" folder, though you can choose to install them to any location.

Reading Today's Reading

When a book is opened for the first time on a given day, DailyReader will show the reading for that day. For instance, if you were reading from the book titled By Faith Alone on Monday, and opened this book again on Tuesday, DailyReader would automatically turn to Tuesday's reading. (You can customize or change this behavior by changing the book options.) If you then turn to another reading (Wednesday's reading, for instance) and then close the book and open it a second time on Tuesday, the reading for Wednesday will still be displayed. DailyReader will only automatically turn to today's reading the first time that the book is opened on any given day.

If today's reading is not displayed, you can quickly turn to it by choosing Today's Reading.

Once you have completed the reading, be sure to check the "Yes! I have completed this reading." checkbox.

Getting Around

To move from page to page in the Daily Reading Book, choose between any of the following options.

If one of the pages contains more text than can be viewed on your screen, use one of the following methods to scroll the text.

Previous | Next

Select Day

To turn to the reading for any day, choose Select Day. From the resulting calendar, select the day that you wish to turn to and press the OK button.

Be sure to select the appropriate year. For instance, if you are reading the Bible through in a year, and started on June 1, 2000, and want to change to the reading for February 1, be sure to select February 1, 2001, and not February 1, 2000.

Getting Around

Keeping Track of Progress

DailyReader can maintain your progress through each Daily Reading Book. As you complete a daily reading, check the "Yes! I have completed this reading!" checkbox shown above the daily reading.

If you use this feature, then DailyReader can quickly take you to the first reading in your book that you have not yet read, the previous reading that you have not read, or the next reading that you have not read. These features allow you to quickly turn through your book to find the readings that you have not yet read.

Previous | Next

Using a Laridian Bible

Many Laridian Daily Reading Books are Christian devotionals, Bible reading schedules, and other works which may refer to Bible references. These references will appear as hyperlinks within the daily reading.

If your book contains Bible verse hyperlinks, then you can view the referenced verses directly within DailyReader. This is especially helpful when you are using a Bible reading schedule, but is also helpful if you want to view a devotional's Bible text in a different translation than the one included in the devotional.

To take advantage of this feature, you must:

  1. Own a Laridian Bible translation.
  2. Select that translation in the Options settings.

Once you have installed a Laridian Bible translation and have instructed DailyReader to use that translation, simply select the Bible verse hyperlink to view that verse within a DailyReader Bible window.

Previous | Next

Choosing the Reading, Bible or Both

DailyReader includes two types of windows: a daily reading window that displays the daily reading for a given day, and a Bible window that displays verses from a selected Bible hyperlink. These windows can be displayed individually or in pairs using the appropriate buttons on the toolbar.

  1. Reading - to display only the daily reading window
  2. Bible - to display only the Bible window
  3. Both - to display both the daily reading window and the Bible window

You can customize DailyReader to display only the Bible window or both the Bible window and the reading window when a Bible verse hyperlink is selected. You can also adjust the relative size of the reading and Bible windows, giving more screen real-estate to one or the other when both are displayed together. For more information on changing these settings, tap or click here.

Adding Books to DailyReader

Adding a book to DailyReader is easy. Every Daily Reading Book from Laridian includes a Setup program that installs the book to your Windows CE device. Once the book has been installed, it can be opened in DailyReader.

Previous | Next

Changing the Start Date

When you buy a printed Daily Reading Book, the day for each reading is often printed at the top of the page. If you buy a book that contains readings for an entire year, beginning on January 1 and ending on December 31, and you buy it in time to start reading it on January 1, then you can start right at the beginning. But what happens when you don't get started right on January 1? You have to decide if you want to start in the middle of the book, try to get caught up by reading more than one reading each day, or just ignore the suggested dates at the top of the page.

However, with DailyReader, you can adjust the starting date of any Daily Reading Book so that it fits your reading schedule. While a book may be intended to be read from January 1 to December 31, you can change the starting date from January 1 to any other day of the year! For example, if you change the starting date from January 1 to March 1, the first reading in that book will now be shown on March 1.

Of course, if you prefer, you can still start in the middle of the book or read extra readings to get caught up. But now the choice is yours.

To change the starting date for any book:

  1. Open the book
  2. Select Start Date
  3. Use the displayed calendar to select the desired starting date
  4. Be sure to select the correct year!

Previous | Next

Catching Up

DailyReader offers two options to help you catch up if you fall behind in your readings for a particular book.

If you are able to read one or more extra readings every day until you have caught back up, then you can select First Unread to quickly turn to the first reading that you have not yet read. After finishing that reading and indicating that you have read it, select First Unread again to turn to the next reading that you have not yet completed. Continue this process until you are caught up or need to stop for the day.

If you are not able to read extra readings each day, DailyReader can adjust the starting date of the book such that you are immediately caught up. Simply choose Catch Up. DailyReader will adjust the starting date such that the first reading that you have not yet read occurs on today. This will put you back on schedule to complete one reading each day.

Previous | Next

Starting Over

You can choose to start reading any Daily Reading Book again at any time. Simply choose Start Over. DailyReader will respond by treating the book as if it had never been opened before.

Remember, you can change the start date for the book after starting over.

Caution: Once you start over with any given book, your progress through that book is erased and cannot be recovered. As a result, you will be asked to verify that you really intend to start reading the book again.

Previous | Next

Transferring Text to Other Documents

If you already see a portion of text you want to copy, just select it with your pointing device (that is, your stylis, mouse, or mouse touchpad as appropriate for your device) and then select Copy to copy the selected text to the clipboard. Switch to PocketWord, Note Taker, or another application, open the desired document, position the cursor, and select Paste to insert the copied text.

When you use this method for copying text, you'll lose most of the format of the text. In particular, paragraphs and poetry will run together.

To retain more of the original formatting, use Copy Reading to copy the entire reading to the clipboard. Or use Copy Verses to copy the verses that are shown in the Bible window.

Please note the copyright on the material you're copying and make sure your use falls within the "Permission to Quote" limitations.

Viewing a Book's Front Matter

Daily Reading Books contain readings for individual days. As a result, DailyReader is organized like a calendar, allowing you to quickly turn to the reading for any day of the year.

However, many printed books also contain general information about the book, such as the title page, information on the author, a dedication, a preface, and so forth. This information is often called front matter.

If your book contains front matter, you can read it be selecting Front Matter. You can turn through the pages of the front matter using many of the same methods that you use to turn through the daily readings, including:

  1. Select Previous
  2. Select Next
  3. Press the Previous Page or Next Page buttons on the toolbar.
  4. Press the right or left arrow keys.

When you are through reading the front matter, uncheck Front Matter to return to the daily reading portion of the book.

When a Book is Opened

Select Options, then the Books tab, to adjust how DailyReader decides which reading to display when a book is opened for the first time on a given day.

Show today's reading: Choose this option if you want to have today's reading displayed when the book is opened. This selection is recommended when you always want to read today's reading, regardless of whether you've been keeping up on prior days. However, this option can cause the displayed reading to change when you return to or start DailyReader.

Note: If your device is left on overnight, then be aware of these special considerations. If DailyReader is the active application (that is, in front) at midnight, it might take a few minutes for it to automatically change the reading. If DailyReader is not the active application, then it will change the reading when you next return to DailyReader.

Show the first reading I have not read: Choose this option if you want to have the first reading not yet read automatically displayed when the book is opened. Select this option if you occassionally skip some days, but want to read the book through sequentially. You can still use the date, shown at the top of the reading, to show you your progress. Additionally, you can use the catch up features to help get you back on track if you fall too far behind. However, as with the first option, this option can cause the displayed reading to change when you return to or start DailyReader.

Leave me where I was reading before: Choose this option if you always want to return to the last reading that you were looking at. This option prevents DailyReader from automatically changing the reading when a book is opened or when the date changes.

Ask me before changing the reading: Select this option if you want to be prompted before the reading is automatically changed.

More Options | Previous | Next

Changing the Date Appearance

Select Options, then the Dates tab, to adjust the appearance of the date in the daily reading.

You may choose to include the day of the week (i.e. Monday) with the date, as well as the placement of the day / month / year.

More Options | Previous | Next

Changing the Font

Select Options, then the Font tab, to adjust the font used to display the reading and the Bible verses. You can select a font from the provided list and/or change the size of the font that is displayed.

When selecting the size of the font, "1" is the smallest available font and "7" is the largest available font.

If your computer supports Clear Type, you can choose whether or not to use Clear Type. Most people find that Clear Type is easier to read; however, you may notice that certain colors are affected. For instance, linked text may appears to have a dark shadow or be somewhat obscured. Note: Once Clear Type is turned on, it cannot be turned off again until DailyReader is restarted. That is, you can turn on Clear Type at any time, but once you turn it off again, DailyReader needs to be restarted before the change can take effect.

How Links and Scrolling are Handled

Select Options, then the General tab, to specify what should happen when a Bible verse hyperlink is selected and when you scroll with the arrow keys.

On Windows CE devices with larger screens, it is often nice to view both the daily reading window and the Bible window at the same time. So, when a Bible verse hyperlink is selected, you can select that both the reading window and the Bible window should be displayed.

On the other hand, on Windows CE devices with smaller screens, seeing both the reading window and the Bible window together can be too much. Therefore, you can select that only the Bible window be displayed when a Bible verse hyperlink is selected.

Check the option on this page to cause both the daily reading window and the Bible window to be displayed when a Bible verse hyperlink is selected. Do not check this box to cause the Bible window to replace the daily reading window when the Bible verse hyperlink is selected.

Remember, this setting specifies the default behavior. You can choose which windows are displayed at any time, so switching between windows is easy.

On devices that contain scroll buttons, it is convenient to scroll through the reading with these buttons. You can specify whether each press of the button scroll a line at a time, or an entire page. Unfortunately, this option is not available on a Pocket PC 2002, which always scrolls a page at a time.

Additionally, you can change the size of the daily reading window and the Bible window. Select "1" for the smallest daily reading window and largest Bible window, or "7" for the largest daily reading window and smallest Bible window. The setting of "4" evenly divides the screen between the two windows.

Selecting the Laridian Bible

Select Options, then the Bible tab, to select the Laridian Bible translation which should be used with DailyReader.

You may use any compatible Laridian Bible translation, and change your selection at any time. (If a Bible verse is already displayed, it will not be changed. To see the new translation, select the Bible verse hyperlink again.) If you need assistance locating your Laridian Bible translation, press the Browse button.

Some Laridian Bible translations include the words of Christ in red. If you want to see these words in red, check the option supplied on this page.

Setting Advanced Options

Select Options, then the Advanced tab, to change special options. You will typically only change these settings if instructed to do so by technical support personnel.

However, there is one option that is of general interest: Add Exit to menu. (If you use a hand-help PC, you will not see this option.) This option allows you to add Exit to the DailyReader menu. It is not necessary to exit Pocket PC and Palm-size PC programs, since Windows will automatically close programs that aren't in use. However, you may still like the control to start and exit programs. If so, check this option.

Backing Up Your Data

DailyReader stores your Options preferences and your progress in your device's system registry. If you ever need to perform a hard reset of your device (which erases all memory), then your DailyReading data will be lost.

Therefore, to help minimize your risk of loss, it is suggested that you regularly backup your Windows CE device to your desktop computer. Please refer to your Windows CE Services documentation for information about performing a complete system backup.

Technical Details

DailyReader is compatible with Hand-held, Palm-size and Pocket PC Windows CE devices. However, you must have the version appropriate for your type of Windows CE device. DailyReader includes a Setup program which should be used to install the program. While you may be able to merely copy files from one compatible device to another, the Setup program assures that the program for the device's particular processor chip is installed. It also adds needed settings to the registry.

DailyReader includes the following files which are installed to the Windows CE device.

DailyReader.exe

DailyReader.htm

The .htm file is this help file, and should be installed into the \Windows directory of the device. The .exe file may be installed to any directory on the device or supplemental storage.

DailyReader uses the Laridian Book Reader technology to read electronic books from your Windows CE device. This is the same technology used by PocketBible. Laridian Daily Books are created with a file extension of .ldr, and contain special keywords to identify the daily readings.

DailyReader is implemented in Microsoft Visual C++ using the Microsoft Foundation Classes and the Windows CE SDK.
