Description

In his Expository Thoughts on the Gospels, J. C. Ryle (1816-1900) set out to create a commentary that was approachable by the everyday person, not one aimed at teachers and scholars. He intended it to accompany one's private reading of Scripture, and to contain both doctrinal and practical exposition.

This commentary series was originally published in seven volumes, but is presented as one large book here. The Gospels are broken down into sections of about a dozen verses. Ryle identifies two or three prominent points in each section and speaks to those points briefly but thoroughly. An emphasis is placed not so much on covering every possible nuance of the passage, but rather to identify the most important thoughts in each section and convey those points as pointedly and plainly as possible.

Overall, the focus is on the Gospel message of salvation and Ryle's goal is not so much to leave "a quantity of truth lying loosely, and thinly scattered over the mind," but rather to "say something that might strike and stick in consciences".

In a few places, notes on difficult passages are included behind the exposition. While more technical than the surrounding text, these are still aimed at the common reader, not the scholar.

About the Author(s)

RYLE, JOHN CHARLES (1816–1900), bishop of Liverpool, was educated at Eton and the university of Oxford, where his career was unusually distinguished. He was Fell exhibitioner at Christ Church, from which he graduated on 15 May 1834. He was Craven scholar in 1836, graduated B. A. in 1838, and M.A. in 1871. He earned his D.D. on 4 May 1880.

Ryle left the university with the intention of running for parliament, but was deprived of the means of gratifying his ambition by his father's bankruptcy. He took holy orders (1841-2) and a position at Exbury, Hampshire. From 1843 to 1861 he served at St. Thomas, Winchester, then Helmingham, Suffolk, at which time he became vicar of Stradbroke. In 1869 he was made rural dean of Hoxne, and in 1872 honorary canon of Norwich. He was select preacher at Cambridge in 1873 and the following year, and at Oxford from 1874 to 1876, and in 1879 and the following year. In 1880 he was designated dean of Salisbury, and at once (19 April) advanced to the newly created see of Liverpool, which he ably administered until his death on 10 June 1900.

Ryle belonged to the evangelical school, of which he was one of the strongest and not the least liberal supporters. He possessed an unusual command of English, and was a prolific author of tracts, of which some have been translated into foreign languages. His charges, and not a few of his sermons, are also in print.
