Description

The Practice of the Presence of God is a spiritual classic that is brief yet impactful. In a series of conversations and letters collected and published by Joseph de Beaufort, Brother Lawrence shares his thoughts on keeping God present in every moment of your every day.

Although assigned to kitchen work at the monastery where he was a carmelite monk, Brother Lawrence managed to turn every task he undertook into an opportunity to draw near to God.

"...the most excellent method he had found of going to GOD, was that of doing our common business without any view of pleasing men..." (Fourth Conversation)
"There is not in the world a kind of life more sweet and delightful, than that of a continual conversation with GOD: those only can comprehend it who practice and experience it..." (Fifth letter)
"Let all our employment be to know GOD: the more one knows Him, the more one desires to know Him. And as knowledge is commonly the measure of love, the deeper and more extensive our knowledge shall be, the greater will be our love: and if our love of GOD were great we should love Him equally in pains and pleasures." (Fifteenth letter)

About the Author(s)

Nicholas Herman, known as Brother Lawrence (born 1605 Lorraine, France - died Feb. 12, 1691, Paris, France). After 50 years of age, Herman entered into the Carmelite monastery in Paris where he died. He spent most of his life doing menial tasks to the glory of God in a monastery, such as serving in the kitchen, and writing about his love for the Lord, both of which have been captured in his famous The Practice of the Presence of God. Early on, he spent many years as a soldier and then as a footman—"an awkward fellow who broke everything." His last words were "I am doing what I shall do, through all eternity--blessing God, praising God, adoring God, giving Him the love of my whole heart. It is our one business, my brethren, to worship Him and love Him, without thought of anything else."
