Description

Few Reformation-era commentaries have stood the test of time as has Calvin. The system of theology which grew to bear his name is still influential today. In these commentaries, we get that theology in his words as he interprets and applies Scripture.

Calvin began writing his Bible commentaries in 1540 with the book of Romans. By 1555 he had completed the New Testament with the exception of 2 and 3 John and Revelation. While he wrote the Old Testament commentaries on Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Deuteronomy, Joshua, Psalms, and Isaiah, the remainder of the Old Testament commentaries were compiled by his students and assistant's from transcriptions of Calvin's sermons and lessons.

The Laridian edition of Calvin's Commentaries consists of all these works: 24 books of the Old Testament and all of the New Testament except 2 and 3 John and Revelation.

About the Author(s)

John Calvin (July 10, 1509 - May 27, 1564) was a theologian and reformer who founded the doctrinal system called Calvinism. This led to the formation of the Reformed Church in the Netherlands and the Scottish Presbyterian Church, among others.

Originally, he began to pursue a career in law in 1528, but became a priest instead. He was converted in April, 1534 after a visit to Lefevre.

Calvin's Institutes of the Christian Religion (Basel, Switzerland: 1536–59) is the basis of theology for his movement. Calvin introduced congregational singing to Protestant services. He helped establish the Academy (University) of Geneva in 1559. His Genevan government became a focal point of French Protestantism.
